| The Showcase concert was conceived
of as a way to demonstrate the breadth and diversity of North American
taiko while highlighting the work of our region's practitioners.
The concert format enables audiences to experience the intensity
of and for student performers to participate in a fully staged taiko
production. Those with only a year of taiko under their belts share
the stage with some of North America's most accomplished players.
Audiences see a living example of the taiko player's path: the dedication,
heart and discipline that make taiko one of the most compelling
art forms in the world.
Many of our Adult Recreational Taiko (ART) students will be performing
for the first time on the opening song, which was given to us by
Chabo, the artistic director of Shidara. The Community Group will
be performing an original composition by our own Jacob Hawkins,
and the Performing Ensemble and Track students will perform several
songs, including one given to us for the occasion by our guest San
Jose Taiko. The Showcase not only provides an opportunity to see
a variety of North American taiko styles, it brings master teachers
to AZ to teach our own taiko community, and helps to expand Odaiko
Sonora's performing repertoire so that we can better serve southern
Arizona audiences.
